These are the pictures I took of the house in the exterior state it has been in since we bought it (10 years ago now!), which we then used all spring to brainstorm ideas for how it should look. Our neighbor Rose gave them to her design students for additional brainstorming too! The project was necessitated by (1) crumbling apart vinyl-like siding that is probably over 30 years old, (2) a front stoop in bad repair that we always thought looked funny, (3) no insulation in the walls, and (4) roof shingles nearing the end of their lifetime.

Geoff - what windows did you decide to use? Do you like them? Ned = Alice
ReplyDeleteThe basement windows are just inexpensive Harvey sliding windows. They're fine, fairly unremarkable. Hey, it's the basement after all. The important thing is that they open easily (unlike the old ones), can lock (unlike the old ones), and are well-insulated (unlike the old ones).
ReplyDeleteThe new window upstairs is actually a nice Pella window unused from a kitchen remodel that my contractor was doing, after the owners changed their mind about the window. It was close to the same size window that we were looking for, so he gave it to us really cheap so he wouldn't be stuck with it.
In a previous renovation about 7 years ago, we replaced all the lead-painted double-hung windows with Trimline replacement windows, and we installed new Andersen bow windows because the old ones were falling apart. Both of these have been fine, my only complaints about them trace back to how the contractor installed them, and we've never used him again after that job.
